Deadliest attacks in Iraq insurgency

BAGHDAD - At least 64 people were killed and scores more injured Wednesday in a string of bomb attacks in three Iraqi cities.
The following is a list of attacks by insurgents in Iraq which have killed 20 or more people since the US President George W. Bush declared the war over in May 2003:

2005
May 11: Bombers strike in three Iraqi cities, killing at least 64 people.
- In Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit, a car bomb struck in a busy market area, killing 31 and wounding 66.
- In the northeastern town of Hawijah, a suicide bomber wearing a belt of explosives blew himself up at an army recruitment centre killing 30 people and wounding 31.
- Insurgents also detonated three car bombs in Baghdad, killing three people and injuring nine.
May 4: At least 46 dead and dozens injured when a suicide bomber blew himself up near a group of police recruits in the Kurdish city of Arbil in northern Iraq.
May 1: 25 dead and 30 wounded in a suicide bombing at a Kurdish funeral in the northern city of Tall Afar.
March 10: 51 Iraqis were killed and 77 wounded in a suicide bombing at a Shiite funeral in Mosul.
Feb 28: At least 118 people are killed and scores more wounded when a suicide car bomb explodes outside a medical centre in Hilla, south of Baghdad.
Feb 19: Twenty-seven people are killed in a string of attacks in Baghdad, the deadliest caused by a bicycle bomber who blew up a bus carrying pilgrims, leaving 19 dead.
Feb 18: Thirty-four Iraqis are killed and more than 100 wounded in six attacks against Shiite Muslims on the eve of Ashura, the holiest festival in the Shiite calendar.

2004
Dec 21: Twenty-two people, including 18 Americans are killed when a suicide bomber blows himself up in a US military base in the northern city of Mosul. The attack, the deadliest single strike against Americans in Iraq, is claimed by the Al-Qaeda linked Ansar al-Sunna Islamist group.
- Dec 19: Car bombs exploded near major religious shrines in Najaf and Karbala, killing at least 66 people and wounding more than 200.
- Dec 3: Twenty-six people, including 12 police officers, are killed when gunmen storm a Baghdad police station and a suicide bomber targets a Shiite mosque. The attacks are claimed by militants loyal to extremist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, Iraq's most wanted man.
- Nov 7: Twenty-one Iraqi policemen are executed in cold blood when gunmen raid police stations in Al-Anbar province in an attack claimed by Zarqawi's group.
- Nov 6: Thirty-six people, including 26 policemen, are killed in a wave of attacks in the Sunni Muslim bastion of Samarra, claimed by Zarqawi.
- Oct 23: Forty-nine Iraqi army recruits and three civilian drivers are killed in an ambush north of Baghdad.
- Sept 30: At least 41 people are killed, including 37 children, and scores wounded in three almost simultaneous car bombings in Baghdad.
- Sept 14: Forty-seven people are killed and 114 wounded in a car bomb attack outside Baghdad's main police headquarters.
- July 28: Seventy people are killed and 56 wounded in a suicide car bombing in the flashpoint town of Baquba.
- June 26: Twenty-three killed in car bomb attack in Hilla, south of Baghdad.
- June 24: Insurgents said to be linked to Zarqawi unleash a wave of coordinated attacks across Iraq killing more than 100 people and wounding 300.
- June 17: A suicide car bomber rams into a queue of army recruits in Baghdad killing 35 and wounding 140. Six members of the US-trained civil defence force are killed in another bombing north of Baghdad.
- June 12-13: More than 20 Iraqis, including two senior officials, die in and around Baghdad. Five Kurdish army recruits are killed and their bodies burnt.
- April 21: Bomb attacks targeting police stations around Basra in southern Iraq kill at least 68 people, mostly policemen and schoolchildren.
- March 2: Bomb attacks on Shiites in Karbala and Baghdad kill more than 180 people in the deadliest bombings since the fall of Saddam Hussein.
- Feb 14: At least 23 Iraqi police and four attackers are killed in simultaneous assaults on a police station and the Iraqi civil defence headquarters in Fallujah.
- Feb 11: Forty-seven Iraqis die in a suicide attack outside an army recruitment centre in Baghdad.
- Feb 10: At least 55 people are killed in car bombing outside a police station in Iskandariyah, south of Baghdad.
- Feb 1: At least 105 people are killed and nearly 250 wounded when twin suicide bombers blow themselves up at the headquarters of the two leading Kurdish political parties in Arbil.
- Jan 18: At least 25 people, mainly Iraqis, are killed and 130 wounded in a suicide car bombing outside the US headquarters in Baghdad.

2003
- Nov 12: A truck bomb attack in Nasiriyah, southern Iraq, kills 28 people, including 19 Italians in the worst attack on Italian troops since World War II.
- Oct 27: Explosions across Baghdad target four police stations and the International Committee of the Red Cross, killing at least 43 people and wounding 200.
- Aug 29: A car bomb kills 83 people, including leading Shiite politician Ayatollah Mohammad Baqer al-Hakim, outside one of Shiite Islam's holiest shrines in Najaf.
- Aug 19: A truck bomb at UN headquarters in Baghdad kills 22 people, including UN Iraq envoy Sergio Vieira de Mello.
