JERUSALEM - The mandatory length of Israeli national service is to be reduced by around six months, Defence Minister Shaul Mofaz said in remarks published Wednesday.
"I don't know if it will six, seven or five months but I have decided to reduce, in a sensible way, the term for obligatory military service," Mofaz told the Yediot Aharonot daily.
Mofaz said a commission had been established to look at the implications and implementation of the reduction.
All Israeli men have to serve three years in the armed forces from the age of 18, while women have to serve two-and-a-half years.
