ANKARA (AA) - Turkish MFA Energy, Water & Environment Affairs Deputy Director General Mithat Rende was elected chairman of Trade & Transit Working Group of the Energy Charter Conference.
MFA Spokesman Namik Tan said that Amb. Rende was elected unanimously chairman of one of the most important working groups of Energy Charter Conference.
Tan indicated that this important development would clinch effectiveness of Turkey's policies aiming to secure energy supply.
-ENERGY CHARTER CONFERENCE-
Energy Charter Conference is an intergovernmental organization comprising 52 countries (from the EU, Central and Eastern Europe, the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), Japan, Australia, Turkey, the Russian Federation, and so on). It was founded by the Energy Charter Treaty signed in December 1994, with the aim to develop an efficient energy market between Western European countries and the former Eastern bloc. Against a backdrop of economic and political instability in the CIS countries, the basic aim is to develop energy cooperation with these countries and enable the EU to diversify its energy sources.
The Brussels-based Energy Charter Conference ensures that the various rules set out in the Energy Charter Treaty, covering areas such as trade, investment, transit and the environment, are truly observed. It also has a mechanism to settle disputes.
