VILNIUS - Lithuanian Prime Minister Algirdas Brazauskas has proposed to make Transport Minister Zigmantas Balcytis the new finance minister following the resignation of Algirdas Butkevicius, the Baltic News Service said Thursday.
The choice had been discussed with President Valdas Adamkus, Brazauskas was quoted by the news service as saying.
No indications were given as to who might become the new transport minister.
Under the Lithuanian constitution, ministers are appointed and revoked by the president based on proposals by the prime minister.
Balcytis, 51, is a graduate of Vilnius University, where he attained the qualifications of economist-mathematician.
In 2000, he won election to the parliament and was appointed transport minister in 2001. He was re-elected to parliament and retained his portfolio late last year.
Butkevicius, who was named finance minister in December, handed in his resignation on April 19, citing disagreements with the governing coalition's tax reform plan, parts of which he charged violated European Union laws.
