BIRKENAU, Poland - A ceremony in memory of victims of the Holocaust began Thursday afternoon at Auschwitz-Birkenau in southern Poland, where Nazi Germany exterminated at least 1.1 million people.
At the sound of three traditional Jewish shofar, or ram's horns, the gathering of some 20,000 people rose to pay a silent tribute to the some six million, mainly European Jews, who were slaughtered by the Nazis.
