May 1st Labor Day Celebrations

ARINC: ''THE RIGHT BEHAVIOR OF UNIONS, WORKERS AND OUR SOCIETY WILL GREATLY CONTRIBUTE TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF TURKEY''

ANKARA - Turkish parliament speaker Bulent Arinc has remarked today (Sunday) that the right behavior of unions, workers and society will greatly contribute to the development of Turkey.
''Our workers contribute to the development of the Turkish economy with their efforts. I congratulate each and every one of our workers on this special day of labor and hope that the unions will continue to work for the welfare of their members,'' told Arinc.
Turkish Labor and Social Security minister Murat Basesgioglu has indicated that May 1st should be a day that is celebrated by meetings, seminars, panel discussions and related activities. ''In order to carry the working world forward, we must continue the dialog and cooperation efforts,'' stressed Basesgioglu.
Turkish Kamu-Sen (Public-Syndicate) Chairman Bircan Akyildiz has commented that May 1st should be a legal holiday that ought to be celebrated with great joy nationwide. ''May 1st should be a holiday and have a greater mark on our minds,'' told Akyildiz.
Dozens of May 1st demostrations took place across Anatolia today. 28 demostrators have been arrested in Istanbul's Taksim square for demonstrating without permission.
