BOMBAY - Amid a disappointing year for Bollywood, some films raked in the rupees at the box office, with love stories, comedies and action thrillers leading the charge.
The top 10 Bollywood films of 2004 in terms of gross total earnings at home and abroad according to global research house PricewaterhouseCoopers were:
1. "Veer Zaara": Legendary producer-director Yash Chopra`s love story about an Indian airforce pilot and a Pakistani girl - 560 million rupees (12.7 million US dollars).
2. "Main Hoon Naa" (I Am There): Action movie in which an Indian army officer fights terrorists seeking to disrupt peace moves with Pakistan - 490 million rupees
3. "Mujhse Shaadi Karogi" (Will You Marry Me?): A comedy about two young boys wooing the same girl - 430 million rupees
4. "Dhoom" (Explosion): Yash Chopra`s cops-and-robbers action flick- 410 million rupees
5. "Khakee": Action thriller starring Bollywood heavyweight Amitabh Bachchan as a policeman battling a top cop-turned-terrorist - 390 million rupees
6. "Lakshya" (Goal): More action as a young man in a search of a goal in life joins the army to fight militants - 340 million rupees
7. "Hulchul" (Commotion): A comedy about the lives of two families - 290 million rupees
8. "Masti" (Mischief): More humour, this time about three husbands keen to have extra-marital relationships - 280 million rupees
9. "Hum Tum" (You And Me): A candyfloss romance under the Yash Chopra banner where boy meets girl, they break-up and get back together again - 250 million rupees.
10. "Aitraaz" (Objection): A steamy thriller centred on a top businesswoman`s desire for her ex-lover now working as her subordinate - 240 million rupees.
