Columnist Yavuz Donat writes in his article headlined ''Failure of One Policy'' in today's Sabah daily that the National Security Council (NSC) which evaluated internal migration in its last meeting (April 18th) should also take up the issue of external migration.
Donat says that the issue is important as four million Turkish origin people live in Europe today and they face many problems.
Donat continues in his article saying that ''in 1985, Turks were ranked the third among the groups who were economically wealthy in Germany behind Germans and Italians. In 2005, however, Turks lost their advantageous position in German economy and they are not even included in the list of ten groups living in Germany whose economic position is strong.''
''In the last 20 years, Turks in Germany regressed economically and got poorer,'' comments Donat who says that he talked to a number of Turkish academicians from Institute of Europe-Turkey Studies in Hamburg. The Turkish academicians told Donat that ''the unemployment rate among Turks living in Germany is 25 percent, it is the highest rate among other groups living in Germany.''
''This means that no work is given to Turks in Germany anymore,'' Donat says and refers to another fact explained by a Turkish psychiatrist that ''one member of every Turkish family living in Germany is in depression today...In the past Europe embraced Turks..now it pushes Turks away. Our people are in depression.''
Donat comments that the political policy of Turkish governments so far was: ''one million Turks would be German citizens in a short time and the German parliament would be full of Turks.'' However, Donat continues, this policy didn't work out and ''500,000 Turks are German citizens today, some of them have dual citizenship, but they are about to lose German citizenship.''
''Dual citizenship was in fact a trap, hundreds of Turks were deceived by this tale and they were prevented to seek for their rights stemming from the agreements. And those citizens stayed silent thinking that they had acquired German citizenship. But now their citizenship is also in danger,'' Donat says.
He ends up his article commenting that Turkey's external migration policy failed, millions of Turks in Europe are in depression and they are not protected. Donat suggests that NSC should take this issue onto its agenda.
