JERUSALEM - Controversial former Israeli president Ezer Weizman died Sunday at the age of 81 after a two-month illness, officials at the Rambam hospital in the northern port of Haifa, where he was being cared for, said.
Weizman, who held Israel's largely ceremonial presidency from 1993 until a corruption scandal forced his resignation in 2000, had been admitted to the hospital's intensive care unit in late Feburary with a lung infection.
It was the latest in a series of illnesses since he stepped down as president.
