WASHINGTON - Robert Wexler and Ed Whitfield, U.S. congressmen who are also the members of Turkish Friendship Group, sent a letter to U.S. congressmen, stressing that Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan had been exerting efforts for Turkish-Armenian compromise.
In return for efforts of the Armenians to make the United States accept their so-called genocide allegations, Democrat Congressman Wexler and Republican Congressman Whitfield said that PM Erdogan sent a letter to Armenian President Robert Kocharian on April 10th, 2005 in which he demanded that ''bilateral relations should be normalized and historical questions should be solved''.
In their letter to U.S. congressmen, Wexler and Whitfield said, ''we have been encouraged by the historic step by PM Erdogan and his government to reach Armenia for a frank and well-organized dialogue on challenging matters concerning the Turks and the Armenians. As strong supporters of Turkish-Armenian rapprochement for interests of both countries, we believe that it is now time for compromise, and hope Kocharian and his government to extend the same olive branch to Ankara to seize this opportunity.''
Wexler and Whitfield added, ''we think you will accept that Turkey has exerted significant efforts for a compromise.''
