TEHRAN - Five children were killed in Iran after they used an explosive shell as a football goalpost, the student agency ISNA reported Wednesday.
The children, aged 11 to 15, died during a match in front of a mosque in the western city of Ilam on Tuesday.
Sixteen others, including eight children, were wounded when what is believed to be an artillery shell from the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war exploded.
Almost 17 years after that war, in which hundreds of thousands died, unexploded shells and land mines still regularly kill and maim in Iran.
