LEFKOSA - Participation in today's presidential elections in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) was 64 percent, TRNC Higher Election Board (YSK) said.
YSK told A.A correspondent that participation in the elections was below expectations, and predicted the reason of this low participation as having to join many elections within the last two years.
Participation in the presidential elections held in 2000 was 81.2 percent.
9 candidates competed in today's elections, namely Zehra Cengiz (Cyprus Socialist Party-KSP), Dr. Mustafa Arabacioglu (Democrat Party-DP), Nuri Cevikel (New Party-YP), Mehmet Ali Talat (Republican Turkish Party-CTP), Dr. Dervis Eroglu (National Unity Party-UBP), Huseyin Angolemli (Communal Liberation Party-TKP), Ayhan Kaymak (independent), Arif Salih Kirdag (independent) and Zeki Besiktepeli (independent).
