WASHINGTON D.C. - IMF Managing Director Rodrigo Rato said on Thursday that the Turkish economy was advancing in the positive direction, adding that the new stand-by agreement could be taken up by the IMF Executive Directors meeting in the beginning of May.
Speaking in a news conference prior to the annual spring term meetings of the IMF and the World Bank, Rato said that Turkey showed an impressing macroeconomic performance in recent years.
Rato stated that there was a significant decrease in inflation rate and a good growth rate was also reached, adding that the Turkish economy was in positive direction.
Reminding the compromise reached between Turkey and IMF for signing a new stand-by agreement, Rato said that the IMF Executive Board would probably discuss the stand-by in the beginning of May. Rato stressed that yet the public debt should be decreased by Turkey.
IMF First Deputy Managing Director Anne Krueger said in her part that the developments in Turkish economy were very satisfying.
