TAIPEI - An earthquake measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale rocked Taiwan Monday, the Seismology Center said. There were no reports of damage or casualties.
The quake struck at 4:28 pm (0828 GMT) with its epicenter 19.4 kilometers (11.6 miles) northeast of the coastal town of Taitung, in the southeastern county of Taitung, and 16.3 kilometers below sea level.
Taiwan, lying near the junction of two tectonic plates, is prone to earthquakes.
Taiwan's worst earthquake, measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale, struck in September 1999 and left some 2,400 people dead.
