SANTIAGO - The mother of Chilean President Ricardo Lagos died Saturday at the age of 108.
Lagos suspended a six-day official visit to Spain, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden a week ago due to health concerns for his mother, Emma Escobar Morales, who became one of Chile's longest living people.
Foreign Minister Ignacio Walker attended Pope John Paul II's funeral this week in Rome in place of Lagos.
Emma Escobar, a teacher by profession, who was widowed when Lagos, her only child, was eight years old, died after contracting an infection that she was unable to recover from.
Lagos and other family members were by her side.
A private funeral will be held for her Sunday in Santiago.
