ISTANBUL - Turkish President Ahmet Necdet Sezer said on Thursday that Turkey was a model country with its secular, democratic, and legal state qualities.
Taking floor at the War Academies Conference, Sezer explained his views about the daily military and strategic problems in Turkey and environs.
Sezer said the problems caused by ending of the Cold War in world`s geopolitical atmosphere could not be overcome yet, stressing that there was a world still in question where balances and values were shaken, uncertainties continued, and where people continued starving to death and lose their lives in wars whereas on the other hand giant steps are taken in science and technology fields.
Sezer said a universal structure, based on sovereign equality of the states, was formed following formation of the UN and following the two global wars in the past century. ``However, the history will remember 20th century as the century of forming alliances and polarization.
``Globalization of terrorism, spreading of weapons of mass destruction, fundamentalism, and separatist violence are the actual concepts of our century,`` Sezer said and noted that, ``if the international community wants to present a better world to the next generations, it should focus on more on concepts like self sacrifice, cooperation, rights, law, justice and commonsense.``
Sezer said Turkey, which is located in an important geography, was in the center of many developments as a stable country, and stressed that, ``Turkey tries to be constructive, be interested in issues which has regional and global importance and tries to present solutions. We hope that Turkey`s efforts are perceived correctly by our friends.``
``Within this scope, it should not be disregarded that 12 of the 22 crisis regions envisaged in NATO assessments interested our country,`` he noted.
Sezer said Turkey`s historical tendencies like regional and international peace and stability, and integration with the European Union (EU) stemmed from the fundamental principles formed within the scope of general willingness of the Turkish nation.
Sezer said Turkey is shown as an example to Moslem countries in the recent period where particularly global transformations were accelerated, adding that Turkey was ready to share its experiences with all the neighbors and friends.
