LYON, France - PSV Eindhoven supporters clashed with police in the centre of Lyon on Tuesday on the run-up to the Champions League game in the evening, an AFP reporter said.
Dutch supporters threw empty beer bottles at police who then charged at the fans several times on the Bellecour square at about 5pm (1500 GMT). Many fans and pedestrians fled the square to take shelter in the metro.
PSV Eindhoven stewards tried in vain to calm things down. When the CRS riot police, stationed close by, arrived at about 1735, hostilies ended.
Several hundreds of PSV supporters had amassed on the square at about midday, dressed in the white and red stripes of their team. Most were peacefully drinking beer while giving the odd chant supporting their team.
The CRS, aided by police, made at least one arrest, an AFP reporter said.
Lyon face PSV Eindhoven in the first leg of the quarter-final with Tuesday's other match being between England's Liverpool and Juventus of Italy.
The last time Liverpool met Juventus, in the Heysel Stadium in Brussels for the 1985 European Cup final, 39 people died when a wall collapsed as Juventus fans tried to escape a surging mass of Liverpool supporters.
