TOKYO - An earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale shook northern Japan early Monday, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.
The quake occurred at 2:57 am (1757 GMT Sunday) with its focus 40 kilometers (25 miles) below sea level off the coast of Fukushima, some 200 kilometers (124 miles) north of Tokyo, the agency said.
There was no danger of tsunamis, it said.
