WASHINGTON - US President George W. Bush plans to nominate Secretary of the Navy Gordon England to be deputy secretary of defense, replacing Paul Wolfowitz, the White House announced Thursday.
England would require Senate confirmation to take over for Wolfowitz, who has become the World Bank's new president, replacing James Wolfensohn.
England, a native of Bush's home state of Texas, previously served as deputy secretary of homeland security from January 2003 to September 2003 and was also secretary of the navy from 2001 to 2003.
Prior to those posts, England was executive vice president at General Dynamics Corporation.
Bush also plans to nominate career US diplomat Eric Edelman, currently US ambassador to Turkey, to be undersecretary of defense for policy, White House spokesman Scott McClellan said in a statement.
