BAGHDAD - A US soldier was killed and five wounded Wednesday when insurgents opened fire on a coalition forces checkpoint in Mosul, north of Baghdad, the army said Thursday.
The five wounded soldiers were taken to a combat hospital for threatment, added the statement, which did not given any other details of the incident.
The death brings to 1,526 the number of US military personnel killed in Iraq since the US-led invasion a little over two years ago, according to a tally based on Pentagon figures.
The US military has lost four troops in insurgent attacks in Iraq over the past two days.
An soldier was killed Thursday near Hawijah, north of Baghdad, and another when his patrol came under attack in the capital on Wednesday.
A marine died Wednesday when his vehicle hit a mine in the restive province of Al-Anbar, west of Baghdad.
