Paris- Fifty-three percent of French voters would vote against the proposed European Union constitution on May 29, the fifth such negative poll in the past several weeks, according to "Paris Match" magazine Wednesday.
The weekly indicated that only 47 percent of those polled would favour the crucial document that is backed by most of the French political establishment, including President Jacques Chirac, most of his conservative party and even the opposition Socialists, who are nonetheless divided In the past two weeks, four polls have shown a negative response to the referendum May 29, which will ask a simple yes or no response to the constitution.
The EU document aims to facilitate the entry of 10 new members to the 15-nation Union and provide a political, economic and judicial framework for the running of the EU and for future expansion.
French voters, although not opposed to the expansion or the constitution, have threatened to sabotage the vote to punish the conservative government for its social and employment policies.
