UNITED NATIONS- The Security Council voted on Tuesday night to freeze the funds, financial assets and economic resources of individuals, due to be named by a committee for their threats to peace and stability in Darfur and to tighten arms embargo on the Sudanese government.
All of the council members voted for the decision except China, Russia and Algeria.
According to the decision, the Security Council is due to form a special committee that includes all council members within 30 days. Once formed, the committee should present a report to the council every 90 days.
The resolution prohibits the Sudanese government from flying its military airplanes to execute attacks. It also disallows the government from mobilizing military equipment to Darfur without seeking the permission of the special committee.
It voiced sharp dissatisfaction with all the warring parties in Darfur, including the Sudanese government, for their non-compliance with Resolutions 1574, 1564 and 1556.
The resolution is the second regarding Darfur in a week. The first, passed days ago, called for forming a 10-soldier international peace mission to Sudan for an extendable 12 months.
The Security Council will review a third resolution, proposed by France and calls for bringing war criminals in Darfur to the International Criminal Court. The United States is expected to veto this resolution for it has refused to join an international agreement to form such a court.
