''(Turkish) Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan says media exaggerates incidents related to public security in Turkey'', indicates Ertugrul Ozkok, a columnist of the Hurriyet daily, in his today's article.
In his editorial Ozkok writes, ''Prime Minister Erdogan criticized the media of exaggerating security incidents the previous day, while the headline of yesterday's (pro governmental) 'Yeni Safak' daily was 'purse snatching is the most rapidly growing sector'(in Turkey). And, this daily wrote, ''crime rate have increased by 35 percent (during last year) according to the Directorate General of Security. And, one-fourth of these crimes are committed in Istanbul'.''
Ozkok continues: ''moreover, this daily (Yeni Safak) wrote that assailants in (only) 28,506 of 94,509 incidents were arrested, while defendants in 60,474 were left unfound.''
''Today, the person who (most plausibly) will become next French president is Sarkozy, the leader of the Union for People's Movement. Sarkozy is the child of a family of Hungarian origin. His mother's family is Jewish. He is walking towards the Elysee Palace in France, where anti-Jewish movements are increasing. How does Sarkozy have a good place among (French) people? With the security he assured in the streets when he was the Interior Minister, i.e. reducing snatching and theft cases and attacks. One more example. How does the legend which made former New York mayor Giuliani a public hero started? By eliminating crime gangs from New York streets. I can increase these examples. But, also there are some reverse examples, i.e. of disappointment of politicians who have left the streets to crime gangs, snatchers and thieves. Prime Minister's advisers should tell him that street security is one of the most important areas of politics,'' Ozkok added.
