LOS ANGELES - "Robots" marched to victory at the North American box office, with the animated film raking in 36 million dollars in its opening weekend, final weekend figures showed Monday.
The 20th Century Fox cartoon movie, featuring the voices of Ewan McGregor, Halle Berry, Robin Williams and funnyman Mel Brooks, tells the story of a determined young robot inventor, Rodney Copperbottom, who moves to the city to seek his fortune.
The children's comedy snatched top spot at the box office from last week's leader, "The Pacifier," starring movie tough guy Vin Diesel.
The story of US Navy special forces operative who becomes a nanny fell into second place with a haul of 18.1 million dollars, according to box office trackers Exhibitor Relations Co. Inc.
"Be Cool," the much touted sequel to "Get Shorty" starring John Travolta and Uma Thurman in the comedic adventures of characters in Los Angeles music industry, was third with 10.25 million dollars.
"Hostage," a new action adventure starring Bruce Willis as a police hostage negotiator, was fourth with a take 10.21 million dollars, while Will Smith's dating comedy "Hitch" finished fifth with a take of 8.7 million dollars.
Clint Eastwood's Oscar-winning film "Million Dollar Baby" was in sixth place, after 13 weeks in release.
The film won best picture, best director, best actress for Hilary Swank and best supporting actor for Morgan Freeman at the February 27 Academy Awards, eclipsing its main rival "The Aviator."
"Baby" has now grossed 5.1 million dollars last weekend, boosting its total box office haul in the United States and Canada to 84 million dollars.
In seventh position, was "Diary of a Mad Black Woman" with 4.8 million dollars, followed by supernatural thriller "Constantine," starring Keanu Reeves, finished sixth with 3.8 million dollars,
"Man of the House" was in ninth spot 1.7 million dollars while Wes Craven's horror flick "Cursed" rounded off the weekly top 10 ranking with 1.5 million dollars.
