ISTANBUL - About 1,500 lefist activists demonstrated in Istanbul Sunday against Turkey's bid to join the European Union, denouncing the bloc's enlargement as imperialism.
"No passage to the EU," "Down with imperialism," the demonstrators chanted, waving red flags.
The gathering in the Kadikoy district on Istanbul's European side was organized by the small Turkish Communist Party (TKP), which is opposed to Turkey's EU membership bid.
No incidents were reported at the demonstration, where some 1,800 police officers were on duty, Anatolia news agency reported.
