TOKYO - An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale jolted the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido Saturday, the Kyodo news agency said, citing the Japan Meteorological Agency.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage and no danger of tsunami waves from the quake which occurred at 3:47 am (1847 GMT Friday), it said.
Its focus was about 60 kilometres (38 miles) underground in the Kushiro region 950 kilometres northeast of Tokyo, Kyodo said, quoting the agency.
