HUGHES: ‘UK SUPPORTS BOTH SIDES EQUALLY’
Deputy Leader of UK’s Liberal Democrat Party Simon Hughes said that studies to find a solution in Cyprus is reaching to an end that’s why, studies should continue and should not be interrupted. Hughes added that federal and confederal solution would be fruitful for both communities in Cyprus.
After completing his contacts in the Eastern Mediterranean University, Hughes gave a press conference at EMU Social Facilities. During his press conference, Hughes said that UK government does not support only one side but supports both sides equally. ‘We have historical relation with Cyprus since 1960 as a guarator country. That’s why, what I should do is to inform my colleaques in the parliament about the issue and to make UK government to be more active for the solution of Cyprus problem. A more active UK government will be very helpful’ Hughes added.
Noticing that Greek Cypriot Administration will take over EU Term Presidency in June, Hughes said ‘ The following process should not despair us and should not make us to consider that solution is not possible’.
Moreover, Hughes said that UN and EU should support both sides equally and both sides should enter to the EU.
As an answer to a question ‘ Did you use Ercan Airport to give a message?’, Hughes said that he has been to Cyprus many times. When he wanted to come to the South, he used Larnaca Airport because he supports both sides equally.
As an answer to another question related to the embargoes imposed on the TRNC, Hughes said that leaders have not found a solution yet but Turkish Cypriots should not pay penalty for this.
Adding that everbody is equal in the island, Hughes said ‘ Finding a solution for isolations depends on the leaders. Leaders should be aware of the fact that it will also be fruitful for the south. The solution of Cyprus problem should be priority. Cyprus problem is an issue for the UN which took the longest time. It is the only problem in the EU which could not be solved yet’.
At the end of his speech, Hughes expressed his satisfaction for being in the TRNC and thanked for the interest of the government authorities.
E-PASSPORTS APPROVED
Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Council of Ministers approved the shape and the context of the e-passport. TRNC Minister of Interior and Local Administrations and the Spokes Person of the Council of Ministers Nazım Çavuşoğlu stated that the e-passports are designed as convenient to international rules. Çavuşoğlu also underlined that the rumors according to the new e-passports as the name of the TRNC is changing is far from the truth and the name Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus will be written on the e-passports both in Turkish and English.
SEEKING FOR THE BILLIONS OF MUBAREK
According to the news of the Greek Cypriot Newspaper Haravgi Egypt Minister of Foreign Affairs Muhammed Emir and United Arap Emirates Secretary General Nabil El Arabi will visit Greek Cypriot Administration in June and stated that the Egyptian delegation will make investigation about the Money lost from Egypt by the previous Egypt Administration and added that same type of delegations are visiting some other countries too.
PRESSURE AGAINST BIBLICAL ARCHAEOLOGY SOCIETY BY GREEK CYPRIOTS
The decision of “Biblical Archaeology Society†(BAS) which is an international organization, concerning the travel from Turkey to Cyprus through the Ercan Airport caused the reaction of the state associations and individuals.
Greek Cypriot daily Politis stated that BAS will fly to Istanbul from USA and on 11th June, they will come to “Cyprus†via Ercan State Airport in North Cyprus. According to the news, the group will visit the archaeological sites and monuments in South Cyprus on 12th June.
According to the newspaper, the founder and the president of BAS Hershel Shanks expressed that any national airlines in the world except the airlines in Turkey does not use Ercan State Airport, but, on the other hand, Ercan State Airport hosts hundreds of flights in a week.
According to the newspaper, Shranks added that US Department of State has stated that US citizens can visit Cyprus regardless of considering the check-point.
