President Gül first met with Afghan President Hamid Karzai. At the talks Karzai said that cooperation and coordination between the two countries should continue.
President Gül said that Turkey would always stand by Afghanistan. Talks between President Gül and Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliev centered on Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway line to be completed by the end of the year.
President Gül also attended a reception given on the occasion of May 19th Commemoration of Atatürk and Youth and Sports Day.
In a speech he made at the reception, President Gül assessed relations between Turkey and the United States.
Stressing that Turkey has always been an important country to the U.S., President Gül said:
"Unfortunately the world’s hottest topics have recently been taking place in the region where Turkey is located. Therefore Turkey is the only country that knows and can best analyze these topics. So, Turkey’s value never lessens but always becomes stronger in the eyes of our allies".
President Gül also gave a message of unity to Turks living in the United States.
