LOS ANGELES - US action hero Vin Diesel was left holding the baby at the North American box office last weekend when his film "The Pacifier" snatched top spot from John Travolta, final figures showed Monday.
The movie, starring Diesel as a US Navy special forces operative who becomes a nanny, raked in nearly 30.6 million dollars in its opening weekend box office trackers Exhibitor Relations Co. Inc. reported.
The movie dampened the debut of "Be Cool," the much touted sequel to "Get Shorty" starring John Travolta and Uma Thurman, which managed only second place in the ranking with ticket receipts of 23.5 million dollars.
Will Smith's new dating comedy "Hitch" finished third with a take of 12.1 million dollars, while last week's leader, "Diary of a Made Black Woman," dropped into fourth place with 11 million dollars.
In fifth place was this year's big Oscar winner, "Million Dollar Baby" with 8.1 million dollars.
Clint Eastwood's film won best picture, best director, best actress for Hilary Swank and best supporting actor for Morgan Freeman at least week's Oscars, eclipsing its main rival "The Aviator."
The supernatural thriller "Constantine," starring Keanu Reeves, finished sixth with 6.1 million dollars, followed by Wes Craven's horror flick "Cursed" with 3.9 million dollars.
In eighth spot was "Man of the House" with 3.5 million dollars, followed by "Because of Winn-Dixie" with 324 million dollars.
Rounding off the weekly top 10 was "The Jacket," starring previous Oscar-winner Adrien Body, with 2.7 million dollars.
