JERICHO, West Bank - A Palestinian intelligence agent in the West Bank was shot dead Monday in a settling of scores between rival branches of the same family, security sources said.
Jawad Dudin, 60, opened fire with a pistol at Mohammed Ismail Dudin, killing him instantly as he drove through the usually peaceful town of Jericho in a police car with a colleague, who was wounded in the shooting.
"It was to avenge my family," shouted Jawad after opening fire, before surrendering to police, witnesses said.
Security sources said Dudin had plotted to avenge the death of a cousin killed more than two years ago during a row with the agent's family.
With lawlessness rife in the occupied territories, Palestinian leader Mahmud Abbas has pledged to overhaul the sprawling security services in a bid to restore order to the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
In the West Bank town of Ramallah on Sunday, a Palestinian intelligence agent, Fahdi Shawakieh, 23, was shot dead by a civil defence force member, a security source said, adding that the killing appeared a personal affair.
