The US Ambassador in Ankara Francis Ricciardone has said Turkey has a big role in resolving the Syria problem but his country considers military intervention as the last resort.
Ricciardone attended a meeting in Istanbul on "Difficulties and Opportunities in a Volatile Region."
The US Ambassador said the turmoil and bloodshed in Syria was the most important problem in the region at the moment and qualified the developments in Syria as unacceptable.
The Syria problem needed to be smoothed out through diplomatic channels, Ricciardone said, adding that military intervention in Syria was the last option his country could think of.
He said further that Turkey as a country having a wealth of colour in terms of different ethnic backgrounds and faiths was the country to best understand Syria which hosted a multitude of different ethnicities and religious groups.
He also said that he believed the meeting of Syria’s friends to be held at the week-end was going to be an important step toward finding a solution to the problem.
Ricciardone said further that negotiations on Iran’s nuclear programme would continue, stressing that what was demanded of Iran was not rant but solution.
