PROPOSAL OF INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE WILL NOT BE SUBMITTED
Detail of the report to be submitted by the UN Secretary General’s Special Advisor to Cyprus Alexander Downer in April started to become clear. According to the information obtained from ABHaber, the report of Downer has the feature of a report managing the sides. The report seems to meet expectations of the Greek Cypriots.
International conference is not mentioned in the Downer’s report. It plans to carry on the negotiations according to the Presidential elections to be held in South Cyprus. Unless a change occurs in the report, two elements come into prominence.
First, there is not any proposal for an international conference. Second, restructuring of the negotiations by taking into consideration the presidential elections to be held in South Cyprus in 2013. According to this, Downer is in tendency to maintain the negotiations open-ended till a solution is reached at the negotiation table.
However the report of Downer is not the final. The final report will take its final shape in the first week of April. According to the information given to ABHaber, Downer has reflected the important parts of proposal and warnings of Greek Cypriots in his report.
In addition to this, Alexander Downer will inform the members of UN Security Council on the report of Secretary General via teleconference on 29 March. Report of Secretary General has been submitted to UN Security Council last Monday. (AB Haber)
DAVUTOGLU: ‘OPPORTUNITY FOR A SOLUTION DECREASED’
Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said that the opportunity for a solution has decreased because of Greek Cypriot Administration’s taking over the EU Term Presidency on July, 2012. In his statement to a magazine published in Egypt, Davutoglu said that Turkish Cypriot side will continue their determined initiatives although this reality and Turkey will continue to support Turkish Cypriots up to the end.
Moreover, Davutoglu added ‘I have a little hope. If the assessment of Alexander Downer, UN Secretary General’s Special Advisor for Cyprus, concerning the negotiation process in Cyprus be positive on March, UN Secretary General Ban can make a call for a high level meeting in April or in the beginning of May. This meeting may end with a new solution agreement which will open ways for a new partnership in Cyprus. But, all these hopes will express nothing if Greek Cypriot Administration does not negotiate sincerely’.
UN HAS NO INTENTION FOR A MULTILATERAL CONFERENCE
It was stated that Greek Cypriot Administration obtained a confirmation by UN Center and UN Secretary General’s Advisor for Cyprus, Alexander Downer that UN has not any intention to make a call for a multilateral conference on the issue of Cyprus.
Under the headline ‘Our Effort is to Continue Negotiations after 1 July’, Greek Cypriot daily Fileleftheros wrote that UN considers continuing negotiations after 1 July in any way.
Indicating that there is a problem at this point, Fileleftheros noted that Turkey will not want to continue negotiations after 1 July when Greek Cypriot Administration will take over EU Term Presidency that’s why, UN thinks how to overcome this problem.
JOINT EXERCISE WITH FRANCE
According to the Greek Cypriot Newspaper Filelefteros joint exercises fulfilled with the participation of France Naval Forces and Greek Cypriot National Forces Navy. The exercise concerned as tactical base and in the frame of South Cyprus and France political and military relations. In the news it was underlined that the exercise held in the so-called Exclusive Economic Zone of the South Cyprus as a result of the good relations of the two countries in the recent years.
The news mentioned that the exercises began with the joint research and rescue exercises in the Larnaca Gulf and following to that exercise it was stated that the exercises will continue with different types of exercises as there are agreement between the two countries.
