ANKARA - A Turkish fighter plane crashed in the north of the country on Thursday while on a training flight, but there was no word yet on the fate of the two pilots on board, Anatolia news agency reported.
The F-16 plane had taken off from a military base near capital Ankara and disappeared from radars while it was flying over the northern town of Yenice, some 140 kilometres (about 87 miles) away from the Turkish capital.
Search-and-rescue helicopters located the plane's wreckage on a mountainous region near Yenice, but the rugged terrain and heavy fog made it impossible for them to land, the agency said.
Efforts were underway to reach the wreckage from land.
The cause of the crash was not immediately known.
