IZMIR - Turkish State Minister & Deputy Prime Minister Mehmet Ali Sahin visited the UNIVERSIADE 2005 facilities in western city of Izmir on Saturday.
Later, Sahin attended meeting of UNIVERSIADE 2005 Preparation Committee.
The word ''UNIVERSIADE'' comes from ''university'' and ''Olympiad'', and means Olympic games for students.
The UNIVERSIADE is an international sporting and cultural festival staged once in every two years in a different city.
Izmir will host the 23rd UNIVERSIADE Games this year.
The Summer UNIVERSIADE consists of 10 compulsory sports and up to three optional sports chosen by the host country. The ten compulsory sports are; Athletics, basketball, fencing, football, gymnastics, swimming, diving, water polo, tennis and volleyball.
