State of emergency ends in Egypt

The Egyptian High Military Council ends today the state of emergency implemented for three decades in the country.

Lifting the state of emergency today has a special importance in that Hosni Mubarak who ruled the country for 21 years said last year he was going to step down on January 25th.

The head of the military administration in Egypt, Hussein Tantawi said the state of emergency was going to be lifted across the country but would remain in effect only to fight crimes related to violence.

Human rights organizations as well as scores of political movements have always insisted that the state of emergency should be lifted.
