ANKARA - Issues of Iraq, Cyprus and defense industry were high on agenda of the regular meeting of the National Security Council (NSC) on Friday.
The statement released after five-hour meeting, highlighted importance of Turkey's setting up close dialogue and cooperation with Iraqi administration and all sections of Iraqi people.
The statement said, ''during the meeting, recent developments in Iraq following the elections were assessed in detail. Continuation of the political process, which was also approved by the United Nations Security Council, and preparation of the new constitution with participation of all sections of Iraqi people are of great importance. Turkey should set up close dialogue and cooperation with Iraqi administration and all sections of Iraqi people for success of the political process, success of efforts to provide lasting peace and stability in the country, and protection of national unity.''
Referring to the Cyprus issue, the statement said, ''results of the early elections in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) were assessed. We welcomed that Turkish Cypriot people confirmed existence of a nation, which fulfil all necessities of the parliamentary structure and democracy, to the whole world. Promises given to lift the isolation of Turkish Cypriots should be kept in regard to provide a fair and lasting solution in the island. Turkey will continue supporting all initiatives for a solution under the good will mission of UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.''
The statement added that measures to develop an adequate national defense industry were also discussed at the meeting.
