IZMIR - Turkey acted right by leaving the Cyprus problem open-ended after its road to the European Union (EU) was left open-ended, President Rauf Denktas of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), said late on Thursday.
At a conference on recent developments in Cyprus held in Aegean city of Izmir, Denktas said that nobody had the right to tell an independent nation that he/she was not recognized it (the independent nation), and stressed that an agreement could be reached in Cyprus only if ``their (Turkish Cypriots`) independence`` was preserved.
Denktas said that if some circles did not accept the independence of one nation, then they got armed, adding that the Greek Cypriot administration was getting prepared and armed to this end.
Touching on pressure of the EU on Turkey, which was asking this country to recognize the Greek Cypriot administration, Denktas said that Turkey`s EU membership was ``open-ended.``
Denktas stated that the EU wanted Turkey to recognize the Greek Cypriot side as the ``Cyprus government`` under ``Ankara Agreement``, and added, ``however, Turkey says that `yes, Ankara Agreement will include Cyprus, but I don`t and won`t recognize the Greek Cypriot administration as Cyprus unless Cyprus is reunified. And, I will continue to recognize TRNC.` That is, looking at its open-ended path (to the EU), Turkey leaves Cyprus problem open-ended. And, this is a right approach.``
