Libya's NTC Deputy Chief Announces Resignation

Abdel Hafiz Ghoga, deputy head of Libya's National Transitional Council, announced Sunday that he is stepping down from his position on the ruling body.

Ghoga told both AFP and satellite channel Al-Jazeera that his departure was driven by national interests. He indicated the decision followed "recent events," pointing to demonstrations in the eastern city of Benghazi where crowds had voiced opposition to his role in the council.

In explaining his move, Ghoga suggested the NTC exists as a platform for pursuing a cause rather than as a vehicle for holding office or power.

Despite the announcement, several NTC members reached by AFP said they had no knowledge of his resignation.
