Turkey Welcome Statements Pertaining To U.N.'s Undertaking A More Active Role In Future Stages Of Transition Process In Iraq

ANKARA - Turkish Foreign Ministry Spokesman Namik Tan said on Thursday that, ''We welcome the statements of both the UN Secretary General and the UN Security Council pertaining to UN's undertaking a more active role in future stages of transition process in Iraq.''
Replying to a question Tan said Turkey would continue to support transition process to a fair and democratic regime in Iraq.
Tan said UN Secretary General Kofi Annan in a statement he made on February 14th, 2005, said the elections held on January 30th reiterated the loyalty of Iraqi people to transition process and stressed that an important stage of the transition process was completed. Annan said the UN fulfilled its responsibility by making technical and consultative contribution to the elections, and noted that UN would continue to fulfill its duties in studies regarding constitutional referendum and general elections.
The statement issued after UN Security Council's meeting dated February 16th stressed that the elections constituted an important phase of the transition process, and Security Council's loyalty to independence, sovereignty, political unity and territorial integrity of Iraq was reiterated.
Tan said, ''in various statements, we have stated that the elections took place in line with the timetable foreseen in transition period.''
''We welcome statements pertaining to UN's undertaking a more active role in future stages of transition process in Iraq,'' Tan said.
