ATHENS, Feb 13 (AFP) - Five people were killed and six injured Sunday in an avalanche that hit a group of 28 mountain climbers in southern Greece, authorities said.
The dead, three men and two women, and the six injured, were members of a mountain-climbing group called the Club of Athens. Authorities had earlier said all the dead were men.
The six injured were taken to hospital near the town of Tripoli.
Earlier authorities put the death toll at three with two missing. The two other bodies were recovered Sunday afternoon.
The mountaineering group left the Greek capital Sunday morning to climb to the top of the 15,000-meter (4900-foot) Mount Menalon, in Greece's southern Pelopennese peninsula.
Snowfall on the mountain, about 180 kilometers (110 miles) south of Athens, was more than two meters deep and access to the region was also difficult because of a thick fog, local officials said.
Special teams who handle natural disasters, equipped with a helicopter, as well as 50 firefighters and members of the police and the army took part in the rescue operation.
The mountainous regions of Greece have been hit with heavy snowfalls in the past several days.
