SAMARRA, Iraq, Feb 13 (AFP) - Insurgents killed at least five people in attacks in Iraq on Sunday, including a senior army officer gunned down in an ambush.
"A high-ranking officer and two companions were killed this morning by armed men north of Baghdad," said army captain Saad Amjad, without being able to provide further information about the identities of the victims.
The group of the Al-Qaeda frontman in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, said in an Internet statement that it had killed Iraqi general Jadaan Malih in an attack north of Baghdad.
The statement, whose authenticity could not be verified, said Malih was commander of a military camp at Taji, north of Baghdad, and that two other people had been killed in the attack.
In the far northern city of Mosul, two civilians were killed and two wounded in an exchange of fire following a rocket attack on local government offices, medical and security sources said.
Another two Iraqis were killed and six other wounded in an attack near a joint US-Iraqi roadblock late Saturday in Samarra, 120 kilometres (70 miles) north of the capital.
The bullet-riddled bodies of two Iraqi soldiers were found near Dhuluiya, 70 kilometres (40 kilometres) north of Baghdad, security sources said.
Three unidentified tortured corpses were also discovered in eastern Baghdad, police said, without ruling out the possibility the victims might have been policemen or soldiers.
