TRIPOLI, Feb 10 (AFP) - US Assistant Secretary of State William Burns met Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi in Tripoli on Thursday and delivered a message from President George W. Bush, the state news agency JANA reported.
Bush "expressed his satisfaction with the positive developments at the level of bilateral relations and the efforts of Mr Kadhafi to resolve the Darfur" conflict in western Sudan, said JANA.
The US Middle East pointman William Burns, who left Tripoli after the meeting, held talks Wednesday with Foreign Minister Abdelrahman Shalgham on the situation in Iraq after the January 30 elections, according to JANA.
Burns last visited Tripoli in June to open a US liaison office, 24 years after Washington broke off diplomatic relations, but the embassy has still not been reopened.
Last September, Bush lifted most economic sanctions on Libya as part of a normalisation process after Kadhafi pledged in December 2003 to renounce weapons of mass destruction.
The sanctions dated back to 1986.
Burns is the latest in a long list of top Western officials and leaders to visit the North African country as the once pariah state emerges from international isolation.
