PHUKET - Turkish Premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan has stated that his administration does not want military clashes and tension in the region (Middle East). ''All possibilities for a new war in the region are a threat to Turkey,'' said Erdogan.
Erdogan met Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharazi last night in Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur.
Erdogan and Kharazi discussed the latest developments in the Middle East.
In their meeting, Erdogan told Kharazi that Iran must closely cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency and European Initiative. ''Nuclear energy must be used for peaceful purposes,'' remarked Erdogan.
Kharazi informed Erdogan that Iran is concerned about recent U.S. remarks. ''We utilize nuclear energy for peaceful purposes and are not afraid of controls by the International Atomic Energy Agency,'' stressed Kharazi.
Erdogan and Kharazi also talked on Iraq. Both leaders expressed that they share similar views on the recent Iraqi elections and the formation of a democratic government there.
''The participation of the Sunnis in Iraqi democracy is important. Otherwise, the Iraqi constitution will not be legitimate,'' said Kharazi.
Meanwhile, Erdogan departed from Phuket for the Maldives after meeting with Kharazi. Erdogan will meet Maldives President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.
