BAGHDAD, Feb 8 (AFP) - Iraq's ministry of communications announced Tuesday it would soon issue tenders for updating the country's fixed telecom network.
The project "aims at providing fixed wireless telephone, Internet and fax services to homes, businesses and government establishments all over Iraq," a government statement said.
The Wireless Local Loop network project is also aimed at increasing the "very low telephone service penetration from about 4.5 percent today to about 25 percent within 10 years and to open the Iraqi market to private investors in a highly visible and changeable telecommunication sector."
The statement said two competing nationwide licenses will be awarded.
