ANKARA - In a press conference with U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Turkish Foreign Minister & Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Gul has stated that, once Israel and Palestine start to co-exist side by side, a new understanding will flourish in the region.
''We are confident that co-existence will wipe away all negative factors in mutual relations in the region,'' said Gul.
Asked about what type of a message he would like to convey to the Middle East, Gul remarked that throughout history there had not been any wars between Muslims and Jews and that they had not committed massacres onto each other.
''Once the Palestinians and Israelis start to live within their own republics, side by side, a new understanding will come out. We must, therefore, continue to support the peace process,'' told Gul.
Referring to his recent visit to the region, Gul stressed that he had witnessed a positive atmosphere in the region and that this positive political climate must turn into a reality. ''The Palestinians must stop suicide bombings. Likewise, the Israelis must stop killing Palestinian leaders.''
Gul indicated that Turkey and the U.S. were working together for global peace and stability. ''We are in constant exchange of ideas on economic developments and fight against terror.''
Gul added that he discussed many current topics with Rice, including Iraq. ''We will continue the process of exchange of ideas and cooperation with our ally United States,'' added Gul.
