ISTANBUL/ANKARA - Istanbul's Ataturk Airport was closed Monday to air traffic because a plane skidded off the runway and negative weather conditions are continuing.
State Airports Administration Istanbul district Director Irfan Balta told reporters that a plane of Atlas Jet Airways skidded off the runway and strong wind is effective in the other runway, thus Ataturk Airport is closed to air traffic till noon.
Balta said that efforts continue to rescue the plane and open the airport to traffic.
Meanwhile, officials said that planes which have to land at Ataturk Airport are directed to Ankara's Esenboga Airport. A total of 5 planes have landed at Esenboga Airport so far, added officials.
