SBC-AT&T Merger Expected to Eliminate 13,000 Positions

The proposed merger between telecom companies SBC Communications and AT&T would result in roughly 13,000 job losses, according to materials SBC presented to analysts on 1 February 2005.

The documents showed that a significant portion of the anticipated cost savings from the deal would come from trimming headcount across several departments, including sales, billing, network maintenance, and administrative functions.

The planned reductions would amount to approximately six percent of the combined workforce of the two companies, which together employ around 210,000 people.
