Three US marines killed south of Baghdad

BAGHDAD, Jan 31 (AFP) - Three US marines were killed in combat on Monday south of Baghdad, the US military said in a statement.
"Three US Marines were killed in action and two others wounded on January 31 while conducting security and stability operations in northern Babil Province," the statement said.
Northern Babil includes a restive Sunni region south of the capital which became known as the "Triangle of Death".
The deaths raised the overall toll for US soldiers killed in Iraq to 1,422 since the US-led invasion of March 2003, according to Pentagon figures.
