ANKARA (AA) - Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul congratulated Condoleezza Rice who is newly appointed as U.S. Secretary of State.
Diplomatic sources said that Gul sent a message to Rice yesterday, and said as two close allies, the United States and Turkey, will further develop bilateral relations and partnership throughout Rice's term in office.
Gul said, ''existing good relations between Turkey and the United States are very important.'' He added that Rice's well-known efforts for extension of freedom and democracy will contribute to solution of disputes in the world.
Gul noted, ''in a period which Turkey paves way to EU membership in stability, I believe the value of common views, and values between two countries will continue both in global fight against terrorism and in settlement of peace in the region.''
''Joint interests of Turkey and the United States will gain more importance while a new period is starting in Afghanistan and Iraq. I am pleased as I will work with you,'' he added.
Gul stressed in his message, ''we are expecting your visit to Turkey in coming days. Your visit will be a chance to discuss recent developments.''
