LEFKOSA - President Dervis Eroglu of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias met in Lefkosa Friday under Cyprus talks to find a comprehensive solution.
Eroglu-Christofias meeting is taking place at the residence of UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy in Cyprus Lisa Buttenheim in the buffer zone.
The Cypriot leaders are discussing "administration and share of power".
Lisa Buttenheim is also attending today’s meeting.
The two Cypriot leaders had met most recently on February 28.
Meanwhile, in a report sent to the UN Security Council, the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said that the Cyprus negotiations could not be open ended.
We can not let negotiations take place without an end and take place for merely the sake of conducting talks, Ban Ki-moon said in his report.
The UN Security Council will discuss Ban Ki-moon’s report on March 15.
UN Secretary-General’s Special Adviser on Cyprus Alexander Downer will brief the UN Security Council on March 15.
Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot leaders have been negotiating on a solution to Cyprus problem in a bid to reunify the island since 2008. The island has been divided since 1974 when an Athens-backed Greek Cypriot military coup on the island led to Turkey’s intervention based on its rights stemming from the Treaty of Guarantee.
